This month’s National Renaissance Student of the Month is Jacob Garrett from Gloucester High School in Gloucester, VA. Nominator Joshua Coleman wrote:
Jake has been active with GHS’s Renaissance initiative every step of the way. When we formed a club for the first year of Renaissance, Jake was the consistent steady hand leading and executing our initiatives – be it a homecoming tailgate, our Renaissance end of semester celebration, and every culture challenge we submitted (and we submitted every month!). Now Jake is in our first ever leadership class working in our celebrations committee, working on our cornhole tournament community event, and designing Renaissance t-shirts for fundraisers. Jake has been committed to the process of making our school a place where students thrive and Staffulty love to work from day one.
What are you involved with at your school?
The Renaissance program, which is represented as a class called Leadership. I do a lot with Renaissance both in and outside the classroom, as well as with Beta Club (honor society), and Chesapeake Bay Governors School which I attend in the morning.
What is something you appreciate about your school’s culture?
One thing I appreciate about Gloucester High’s culture is its willingness to change. Without this willingness, Renaissance would not have been able to have impacted the school as much as it has. A lot of it has to do with the motivation and hopefulness of staff, especially our principal Dr. Mygas who has approved everything Renaissance has done so far.
What’s a favorite Renaissance moment for you?
My favorite Renaissance moment has been our Tailgate. Every year the high school has hosted one but in my experience, it has been lack luster until Renaissance got involved. While even though it’s only been one year with Renaissance being involved, the difference in the last three years, including this upcoming one, is exponential whether it be staff involvement, student involvement, or more involvement from other clubs and school organizations.
How has Renaissance affected you personally?
Renaissance has brought me out of a shell I’ve had. It’s shown me how to be a leader and affect, not just the people around me. but the whole community.
What’s something you are “All In” for inside and outside of school?
I am “All In” for the improvement of our community and its strength. Even if I can change only one person, or organization, to me it’s worth it to see that change.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be more committed to things in their life?
To go “All In” – even if it’s not for others because enjoyment and true satisfaction can not be achieved without giving it your all. Work and results have an exponential relationship, in which the greater the work you put in, the higher that reward will be 100% of the time.
Jacob will receive a water bottle and a decal in recognition of his achievement.
